The proportions are the result of a thorough study by our architects’ team so that the different spaces are recognizable and the feeling indoors is one of fullness. It is a simple yet sturdy construction made of materials chosen to provide both comfort and balance. ÁPH80 embodies the principles and objectives of ÁBATON: wellbeing, environmental balance, and simplicity. Its gabled roof is 3,5mts high indoors. Most of the materials can be recycled and meet the sustainable criteria that ÁBATON applies to all its projects. It blends in with the environment thanks to its large openings that bring the outdoors inside. The use of wood throughout the building not only adds calmness and balance but it is also hypoallergenic. Return statue to gateway to the city

first_imgI would like to comment on the possible relocation of the Statue of Liberty replica that stood for decades in Liberty Park.Let me point out that Schenectady was settled by immigrants, primarily the Dutch, in the mid-1600s. It encompasses so much history — the survival of the Stockade District, the former Hotel VanCurler (now SCCC), the obvious name of the Western Gateway Bridge and the Glen Sanders Mansion to name a few. Categories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion That area of State Street has light posts chosen a number of years ago to replicate older-style lighting. Even the college suites housing for SCCC students was designed to blend into the neighborhood. It astounds me that anyone familiar with this part of New York state could possibly say that the statue “doesn’t seem to fit anymore” but chose to rename the park Gateway Plaza.Personally, what I feel doesn’t fit into such a historic area is light saber pillars. Why would you install something that resembles a fictional energy sword from a Star Wars futuristic movie in a city over 300 years old?As much as I appreciate my Italian heritage, I also appreciate my Dutch heritage and believe the statue should be returned to the “gateway” of the city where all who enter can appreciate it.Sharon TrumplerScotiaMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?EDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationlast_img read more

Phoenix Suns select Ennis 18th overall, make him 1st SU player taken in 2014 NBA Draft

first_img Published on June 26, 2014 at 2:42 pm Contact Phil: [email protected] | @PhilDAbb NEW YORK — For the second straight year, a Syracuse point guard is a first-round pick in the NBA Draft.Following in Michael Carter-Williams’ footsteps, Tyler Ennis was selected 18th overall by the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. He was the fourth point guard selected, after the Boston Celtics took Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart sixth overall, the Philadelphia 76ers picked Elfred Payton of Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 10 and the Minnesota Timberwolves chose former UCLA man Zach Lavine at No. 12 overall. In his one season with the Orange, Ennis seamlessly took over the point guard position and was instrumental to SU’s program-record 25-0 start. He played in all 34 games and averaged 12.9 points, 5.5 assists and 2.1 steals per contest.Ennis developed a knack for late-game heroics, highlighted by his 3-pointer from 35 feet out as time expired to steal a win from Pittsburgh and extend Syracuse’s undefeated run.He also took the Orange’s final shot of the year, a 3-point attempt that rimmed out in the final seconds of SU’s loss to Dayton in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. He officially declared for the draft five days later.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textThere remains some doubt about his athleticism, his ability to play man-to-man and his outside shooting as an NBA prospect, but his poise and knowledge of the game were more than enough to make him worthy of a first-round selection.“I’m real excited,” he said. “I think at this point, everybody just wants to hear their name called.“I’m more than ready to work.” Comments Facebook Twitter Google+last_img read more

Saint Martin’s University’s New Plaza and Courtyard

first_imgFacebook4Tweet0Pin0 Submitted by Jeffery B. Glander and AssociatesThe need to replace aging infrastructure and improve drainage created the opportunity for a new, more sustainable campus plaza and courtyard. Jeffrey B. Glander & Associates and SCJ Alliance designed this project to include a new outdoor space that provides both meditative garden areas for the monks at St. Martin’s Abbey, and arrival way finding for visitors to the admissions office of St. Martin’s University. Old asphalt driveways and sidewalks were replaced with over 34,000 s.f. of new, colorful architectural concrete and pervious turf paving fire lanes.A tiered fountain water feature and the University logo embedded in granite paving highlight entry to “Old Main” and the school offices. Visitor parking is directed off-site to create a truly pedestrian only atmosphere for the plaza environment. Other design features include a 300 foot long brick wall with arched “windows” between the monastery and campus areas, extensive landscape renovation, drainage improvements, site and landscape lighting and new pedestrian pathways. This project recently won the WACA Excellence in Construction award for the Architectural/Decorative Concrete category.last_img read more

Real Madrid president wants to see Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal at the Bernabeu

Powered by Firework Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez has revealed that the Spanish football giants are planning to host an exhibition tennis match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the Santiago Bernabeu. In a recent board meeting, the members were informed about the idea along with the proposal to introduce a Real Madrid women’s team.Advertisement Spanish newspaper ABC claims that the president has spoken with Nadal on his plans to arrange the match in front of a massive crowd, 80,000 to be specific. The match would record the largest ever attendance seen at a tennis match, double more than the current record which stands at 35,681 when Kim Clijsters beat Serena Williams in an exhibition at the King Baudouin stadium in Brussels. However, the two greatest tennis players of all time will break the record when they play their African friendly in front of 50,000 people next February.Advertisement The Swiss and the Spaniard have met on 40 occasions with Nadal having a 24-16 advantage over his opponent. The pair was almost set to face each other for the first time ever in the US Open last week, but Federer lost the quarter-final to Grigor Dimitrov much to the disappointment of the fans. Nadal on the other hand, went on to lift the trophy beating Daniil Medvedev in an outstanding final which lasted four hours and 50 minutes. Both Nadal and Federer will be back in action at the Laver Cup next weekend where they might play doubles together for Team Europe.Although, it is unclear at the moment about the date and time of the epic match at the Bernabeu, it appears that the clash will take place once the 38-year-old Federer retires from the ATP tour.Advertisement Advertisementlast_img read more

Houston gets to big gun Oswalt

first_img “I like those guys to get all the recognition, myself. I don’t like to be the guy that stands out,’ Oswalt said Friday, a day before his fourth career playoff start. “I like kind of sneaking up on guys instead of being out front.’ That doesn’t mean Oswalt (20-12), the first pitcher since 2001-02 with consecutive 20-win seasons, isn’t a big-game pitcher. The right-hander from Weir, Miss., a town of about 600 people, just isn’t enamored with the spotlight off the mound. They sort of feed off that a little bit,’ manager Phil Garner said. “Roy doesn’t shy down from it at all, but his personality is just much more low- key.’ Oswalt was Houston’s starter on opening day, not Clemens or Pettitte for their hometown team. And Oswalt’s last start was in the regular-season finale Sunday, when he beat the Chicago Cubs to make sure the Astros won the wild card outright without having to play a one- game tiebreaker. “I don’t think he’s going to be running for political office any time soon. He just enjoys pitching,’ Garner said. “If he could just move all this into his hometown, I think he’d be perfectly fine with that.’ In his two starts in last year’s playoff series against Atlanta, Oswalt allowed three runs over 11 1/3 innings. He won the Game 5 clincher to give Houston its first postseason series victory in eight tries. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. FSUs Jameis Winston Will Not Be Charged In Sexual

Photo by SI.comJameis Winston, the freshman quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate for No. 1 ranked Florida State, was cleared of prosecution for rape by the state attorney for the Second Judicial Circuit Thursday afternoon.Winston had faced felony charges after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an off-campus apartment on Dec. 7, 2012.“We’ve carefully examined all the evidence in this case and have concluded that no charges will be brought against anyone in this case,” Florida state attorney Willie Meggs, said. The state’s attorney office interviewed the woman the first week into their investigation over the last three weeks. DNA found in the woman’s underwear matched Winston’s, ESPN.com reported last month. Winston admitted through an attorney that he had consensual sex with the accuser. But the woman, who is 19, said through her lawyer that Winston raped her.“We have a duty as prosecutors to determine if each case has a reasonable likelihood of conviction,” Meggs said. “After reviewing the facts in this case, we do not feel that we can reach those burdens.”The case could be reopened if new evidence emerged, but Meggs indicated it was unlikely, saying, he “had no earthly idea what (new evidence) would be.”With Winston emerging as a college football star, the natural question was raised about the potential for preferential treatment afforded Winston.“We try to treat everyone fairly and I think we have a track record of doing that,” Meggs said.At the heart of the investigation was the fact that another man’s DNA was also found in the sexual assault kit. In search warrants released, the woman said she and friends had alcohol shots at Potbellys and that her “memory is very broken from that point forward.”She also said she recalled being with a man in a cab and making her way into an apartment, where she said the rape occurred. Additionally, she said a man dressed her afterward, put her on a scooter and dropped her off at an intersection. Conflicting an earlier statement, she said she did not know where the alleged rape occurred.Winston has not spoken about the case. read more
