Twelve suspects in total identified with links to Boutaris attack so far

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram As the days pass, authorities are quickly identifying more suspects with a connection to the attack carried out against Thessaloniki’s mayor Yiannis Boutaris.The twelfth suspect, a 22-year-old local, was identified on Saturday. They will face charges of verbal assault and disturbing the peace.The mob attack took place on Saturday 19 May on Remembrance Day, during commemorations for the Pontian genocide at Thessaloniki’s White Tower.Mr Boutaris was verbally abused and told to leave the event, before being attacked with bottles. After falling to the ground, he was then kicked in the head and all over his body, resulting in the 75-year-old being hospitalised.Last week three other suspects aged between 20 and 34 were detained by police and charged.The two younger men aged 20 and 21 were identified through videos taken at the site of the incident. They are shown kicking and smashing the windows of Mr Boutaris’ car and as a result will be charged with aggravated damages.Meanwhile on Wednesday, three men were charged over the assault and found guilty by a court.Two of the suspects received suspended jail sentences, and the third was offered to buy out his sentence for a charge of five euros per day.last_img
