first_imgBy WVUA 23 Reporter Kate Steiner and WVUA 23 Web Coordinator Kailey NeitzelThe annual USA Triathlon Nationals are returning to Tuscaloosa once again.This Friday, April 27, 1,300 athletes from more than 100 different collegiate triathlon clubs, in addition to more than 100 high-school aged athletes will be racing in the USA Triathlon Nationals in Tuscaloosa.This year is Tuscaloosa’s fourth time hosting the triathlon; the first time in 2011, next in 2012 and then again in 2017.USA Triathlon Communications Manager Caryn Maconi said this event is a chance for athletes to get a step up toward even higher accolades.“We’ve had collegiate athletes who have won or placed really high in the past who have gone on to become professional athletes and even Olympians,” Maconi said.Because of recent heavy rainfall, the swim portion of the triathlon was replaced with a second running portion. The races all finish at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater.“Events like the USA Triathlon have such a positive impact on the community and help us further elevate our local experience economy,” said West Alabama’s Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Jim Paige.The triathlon will take place rain or shine.last_img
