The S&P BSE Sensex fell sharply by 248 points on Thursday, declining to the levels not seen in more than a month, as investors remained nervous ahead of counting for the Bihar assembly elections on 8 November. The Sensex closed at 26,304 points, down 0.94%, while the 50-share Nifty fell 85 points, or 1.05%, to end at 7,955.”Failure to sustain above 8,100 has reinforced weakness across the board. Selling pressure was felt across sectors with deterioration of market breadth, which is a cause of concern. Traders are advised to be cautious and selective in their stock selection even though valuations may seem relatively attractive,” said Amar Ambani, Head of Research, IIFL.The five-phase Bihar election, which ended on 5 November, is being seen as a referendum for the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While some exit poll surveys are predicting a win for the NDA, others are saying that the mahagathbandan led by JD (U) could win by a slender margin due to the effective campaign by incumbent chief minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar. The fairly reliable of all the exit polls – Today’s Chanakya – has given the BJP-led NDA a clear majority of 155 seats and 85 to the Mahagathbandan (Grand Alliance).”Market is falling in anxiety to the Bihar exit poll prediction today. Bihar has 16 Rajya Sabha seats of which only 5 seats will retire in 2016 and this will not having any material impact on ruling government’s majority. This is unlikely to revamp the central governments capex of reforms going forward but only a sentimental impact in the near-term,” Vinod Nair, Head-Fundamental Research, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services, told Business Standard. The sell-off was also led by growing hints over interest rate hike by the US central bank, which is a major negative for emerging markets like India. In her Congressional testimony, the US Federal Reserve chairperson Janet Yellen on Wednesday hinted at monetary tightening next month.”Following the relatively hawkish October FOMC statement and yesterday’s signals from Fed Chair Yellen and her two top lieutenants Fischer and Dudley reinforcing expectations of a December rate hike, the threshold for Fed lift-off seems rather low,” said Nordea Markets in a note.Renewed concerns over the US Fed rate hike in December have impacted global markets, with China’s Shanghai Composite index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng falling by 0.25% and 0.7%, respectively. All the BSE sectoral indices ended lower, with Realty, Healtcare, Bankex and IT as the top losers.Reliance Capital (up 1.3%), NTPC (up 0.7%), Hero Motocorp (up 0.7%), ITC (up 0.4%) and Hindustan Unilever (up 0.2%) were the top gainers among the Sensex stocks, while DLF (down 5.1%), Tata Steel (down 4.2%), BHEL (down 3.3%), Bharti Airtel (down 2.8%) and SBI (down 2.1%) ended as biggest losers. On the commodities front, gold prices fell to Rs 180 to Rs 26,250 per 10 gram on the back of firmer US dollar. Silver prices also dropped by Rs 320 to Rs 35,750 per kg.Today’s Chanakya
A general view of Reliance Jio headquarters is seen on the outskirts of Mumbai, India, June 1, 2016.Reuters fileUpdate at around 2.50 pm: The BSE Sensex was up 262 points at 29,627, led by GAIL (India), Axis Bank, Larsen & Toubro and HDFC Bank.Original story:Shares of Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) were trading with minor gains on Monday ahead of Q4 results. At around 1.10 pm, the RIL stock was up 1.19 percent at Rs 1,416 even as the BSE Sensex was trading 0.75 percent higher at 29,586.A Sensex heavyweight, the Mukhesh Ambani-controlled company’s gross refining margin (GRM) and management commentary on Reliance Jio will be in focus.”We expect profitability of the company for the current quarter on a consolidated basis to be flat both on sequential as well as on a yearly basis but the commentary on Jio and energy project execution will be the key,” the Moneycontrol.com quoted Rohit Singre, Senior Research Analyst (Equity – Technical) at Bonanza Portfolio Ltd., as saying. The information on Reliance Jio would also share prices of rivals Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular, the two listed telecom service providers.RIL was in the news last month when capital markets regulator Sebi barred it from accessing equity derivatives market for a year and directed the company to pay nearly Rs 1,000 crore for alleged fraudulent trading in a 10-year-old case. The ban, in effect from Friday, relates to alleged fraudulent trading in the Futures and Options (F&O), or derivatives, space in the securities of RIL’s former listed subsidiary Reliance Petroleum (RPL) — now merged with the listed parent firm, as reported by news agency IANS.Shares of Bharti Airtel were down 0.54 percent to Rs 341 apiece. Popular on Variety Glashow wouldn’t disclose financial details of Awesomeness’ operations. But she said the company’s cutbacks helped accelerate its growth, compared with its previous ownership under Comcast’s NBCUniversal, Verizon and Hearst. “We’ve made a lot of changes, and being part of Viacom has let us tap into resources that have made us more efficient,” she said. One of the reasons Awesomeness has clicked with Viacom: The group is overseen by Viacom Digital Studios president Kelly Day, who worked with Glashow and Zimmerman at Awesomeness as chief business officer. Also in Viacom’s senior ranks is Brian Robbins, currently president of Nickelodeon, who co-founded AwesomenessTV in 2012 and provides critical support to the Awesomeness team.“We’re inside a company where we have the ability to partner and collaborate and align with their goals,” Glashow said.Glashow praised Awesomeness’ parent, touting its “best-in-class distribution relationships” and noted that Awesomeness is working with Viacom International Media Networks to sell its content around the world. she also cited Viacom’s relationships with marketers “that are such a scale we’re able to tap into that immediately. We’re able to amplify our series on Day One.”All that said, some of Awesomeness’ recent wins — with popular movies and series it has sold to Netflix and Hulu — have less to do with Viacom and more to do with the company’s history of focusing on content for teen audiences on YouTube and social media.“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” on Netflix, starring Noah Centineo and Lana CondorAwesomeness is the studio behind Netflix 2018’s film phenomenon “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” — co-starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, which Netflix said was one of its most-streamed original movies of the year — as well as Hulu’s critically acclaimed “Pen15″ and Daytime Emmy-winning drama “Zac and Mia,” starring Anne Winters and Kian Lawley.“We’ve been as a brand working in the teen space since the inception of Awesomeness,” said Glashow. “We’ve supersized our audience on streaming platforms, and we are proselytizers in the marketplace about connecting with that audience. The marketplace is now waking up to how critical this segment is.” Digital media players face uncertain and challenging economic times — and the best outcome these days for struggling independents may be to get swallowed by a larger entity.Nine months after Viacom scooped up Awesomeness for a fire-sale price, the co-heads of the youth-targeted division — Rebecca Glashow and Shelley Zimmerman — say they couldn’t have asked for a better home.“It’s been beyond our expectations in terms of how we can align with not only VDS [Viacom Digital Studios] but the broader Viacom brands,” said Glashow. “We’ve been able to take Awesomeness and hit the ground running.”Added Zimmerman, “Part of why we’re so excited about the prospects for Awesomeness is that we’re partnered with a company that has built iconic youth brands.”Of course, Awesomeness went through pain in assimilating into Viacom: The media conglomerate cut nearly 100 Awesomeness employees — about half the staff — after deal closed last July. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Before joining the company in 2016, she held senior roles in content distribution and strategy at Discovery and Comcast. Before being promoted co-chief of Awesomeness, L.A.-based Zimmerman was head of its TV studio and prior to that led scripted programming development and production at Warner Horizon and Tollin/Robbins Productions.Pictured above: Awesomeness co-heads Rebecca Glashow (l.) and Shelley Zimmerman Media and Tech Execs Talk Fostering Safe Dialogue Online This spring’s Awesomeness film slate includes Netflix’s “The Perfect Date,” starring Centineo as a high-school student who creates a dating app that lets him act as a stand-in boyfriend to earn money for college. And Awesomeness is now working on a sequel to “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” which will again star Centineo and Condor.Additionally, Awesomeness has sold Netflix “Trinkets,” a series based on Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith’s YA novel, which follows three teenage girls (played by Brianna Hildebrand, Kiana Madera and Quintessa Swindell) from different social circles who form an unlikely friendship over their shared affinity for shoplifting.“Pen15” was produced by Awesomeness with Andy Samberg’s production shingle, set in the ’90s and portraying “middle school as it really happened.” In “Zac and Mia” season 2, which launched on Hulu in February, the couple are now forced to navigate their budding relationship out in the real world, unprotected and unsheltered by the walls of a hospital.“Pen15” on HuluAnother Awesomeness show on Hulu is thriller “Light As a Feather.” Hulu has brought it back for a second season, which will debut this summer with the return of Liana Liberato and Brianne Tju along with co-star Haley Ramm. The second season picks up following the events of season one, when an innocent game of “light as a feather, stiff as a board” goes wrong and the five teen girls who played start dying off in the exact way that was predicted, forcing the survivors to figure out why they’re being targeted — and whether the evil force hunting them down is one of their own.“We want to be the dominant studio for [the Gen Z] audience across platforms,” Glashow said.Awesomeness is looking to continue to grow its film and TV slate, in addition to expanding its popular short-form programs on YouTube, which include “My Dream Quinceanera” and “Malibu Surf.”Zimmerman noted that Awesomeness also has been building relationships with “the most important talent for this generation,” like Noah Centineo. They’re “people we’ve always had relationships with who are having this exponential growth,” she said.
