Two of the three attackers were unprecedentedly killed by a round of fire from police. The attackers who were killed by police have been identified as Khuram Butt and Rachid Redouane. The vigil was led by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who described the attack as “barbaric” and said that, “London stands in defiance against this cowardly attack on our city, our people, our values and our way of life.” Thousands of flowers were left in tribute near the Thames and a moment of silence was observed. Rangpur goes to polls ThursdayThe northern city of Rangpur is going to civic polls today, Thursday, first ever on the party lines with country’s two major archrival political parties – ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) – exerting their all-out efforts to bag the win.Despite being civil polls, Rangpur mayoral elections have taken the centre stage of the country’s politics as both the arch rivals are considering it as a dress rehearsal for the 11th parliamentary elections scheduled to be held in late 2018.Besides, ruling AL’s ally and official opposition in parliament Ershad-led Jatiya Party has been bent on winning the polls to prove its popularity in its bastion, Rangpur.Chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday said the election commission (EC) has completed all the preparations to hold the Rangpur City Corporation polls in a free, fair and credible manner, reports BSS.“All preparations have been completed for holding the polls and the overall situation is in favour of this…We hope that the election will be held in a free, fair and transparent manner,” he said.The CEC was addressing a press briefing over the polls at the election commission secretariat media centre in Dhaka.CCTV cameras will be used at three voting centres, Huda said, adding that they cannot confirm the use of new EVMs (Electronic Voting Machine) in Thursday’s polls.Election commissioner Md Rafiqul Islam said the EC has taken all preparations so that the voters can cast their votes peacefully.Adequate number of law enforcers will be deployed for security, he added.A total of seven candidates for the mayoral posts, 211 candidates for 33 general councillor posts and 65 candidates for 11 reserved posts for female councillors ended their hectic last-moment electioneering Tuesday night.Polling will begin at 8:00am on Thursday in all 1,122 polling booths of 193 polling centres under 33 wards in area and continue till 4:00pm without any break.Counting of votes will start subsequently at Police Community Hall in the city.A total of 393,994 voters would apply their voting rights. Kolkata: Baruipur Police have busted an arms racket which was running behind the garb of a kerosene shop. Sleuths have arrested two accused and seized several firearms along with multiple cartridges. According to sources, Special Operations Group (SOG) of Baruipur Police recently got a tip-off that an arms racket was operating in Joynagar.Based on the information, sleuths started gathering inputs. Several sources were engaged to locate the place since past few days. Two days ago sleuths came to know from sources that something fishy was detected at a kerosene shop in Joynagar’s Khakurdah Bazar. Based on the information, sleuths kept a close watch on the shop owned by Abdul Jalil Mondal, who also resides in the same area. Late on Thursday night SOG of Baruipur Police and police personnel from Joynagar police station conducted a joint raid on Mondal’s kerosene shop and found two persons were about to ink a deal. One of them was Mondal. The other accused was identified as Abdul Rouf Laskar of Kashipur in South 24-Parganas. During search operations, sleuths found two long range firearms and 90 rounds of live bullets. Also 55 rounds of bullet shell were seized. They have been booked under the Arms Act. It is suspected that Mondal is nothing but an agent in the arms dealing racket. Sleuths are trying to identify the mastermind of the racket by interrogating him. Earlier, South 24-Parganas Police had busted an arms racket and seized nearly 15 firearms, including 10 pipe guns, were seized from a car during a raid on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass near Sonarpur area during August last year.
